CYCLOTHON

The first edition of Hero Cycles lndia Cyclothon took off with much fanfare and festivities today at Chandigarh with over 5, 714 turning out in various categories in the largest celebration of cycling at foothills of the Himalayas. Sport18, the sports marketing division of Network 18 group, along with Hero Cycles concluded the last competitive national road cycling event before the Commonwealth Games. The race was held under the aegis of the Cycling Federation of lndia with race director Rakesh Mohindra. 15 national state teams participated in the 60 Km Hero National Elite Race that saw a close finish in the end.

A complicated first of its kind angioplasty procedure in India not only saved the life of an 80 year old Hukum Singh, but also fetched a City Doctor an award. Dr. Shiv Bagga, 34 Year old Professor at Cardiology department of PGI, who has been conferred with the 'Best Case Award' at India Live-2010, an interventional Cardiology meet held at New Delhi recently, says his patient was diagnosed with distal left main bifurcation disease. Due to old age and renal problem, the conventional by-pass was not possible. Doctor decided to use plasty technique, which he learnt during his visit to China. He modified the Chinese procedure with a technique used in Italy and succeeded. Hukum Singh, who retired as a lineman from the P.S.E.B., however, is oblivious to the fact that he has got a new life.

SJOBA Rally

The 23rd SJOBA Thunderbolt Sub-Himalayan Rally concluded as all participants crossed the finish line at St John's High School, Sector 26. Out of the 71 participants in the Challenge Rally, only 46 (17 Gypsies, 6 cars, 26 motorbikes) could complete the full track. After the participants were given a ceremonial flag-off at Lawrence School, Sanawar, two ace rallyists Suresh Rana and Shuchi Thakur had to bow out, as their Gypsies had developed problems. In the TSD Rally, out of 30 participants, 20 completed the rally. The rallyists had covered nearly 540 kilometers of challenging and adventurous hilly terrain in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in two days to touch the finish line.

Science Express touch city

The first day of "Science Express", saw more than 500 students visited the special train, which, this time, has a special coach on global warming. The coach got a great response as maximum students showed interest in knowing about issues concerning the environment. "It is a wonderful experience. The Chandigarh Administration is all set to implement the hike in fare of CTU buses. The proposal awaits a final nod by UT Advisor Pardeep Mehra, which it is likely to be granted in a meeting scheduled for next Monday. Once the hike is approved, it will be implemented from the first week of April. The Secretary Transport Ram Niwas said, "There has been no revision in the bus fare since 2006. A committee was formed to look into the matter and considering the changing scenario it has recommended the hike. Once approved by the advisor, it will be notified."The committee has proposed a hike of Rs 5 up to 5 km and Rs 10 for 10 km and above. Earlier the charge for both 5 km and 10 km was Rs 5. For AC buses the charge will be Rs 10 up to 5 km and Rs 15 beyond that.

U-13 cricket

A cricket tournament for Under-13 boys named CCA cup Cricket Tournament will be organized by the Chandigarh Cricket Association affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) from March 23. The spokesperson of the CCA said all matches would be played on league basis. Each match will be played for 20 overs at different venues- GNPS-36 Cricket Ground and Banyan Tree School Cricket Ground- 48. A total of six teams from the tri-city, including Pace Riders, Modgil Challengers, Punjabi Tigers, Sunfire Rockets, Rihalaz Warriors and LIC Juniors would be playing in coloured dresses.

PU practical examinations

The Punjab University practical examinations which were earlier scheduled for March 10 and 11, 2010, and were later postponed, will now be held on March 27 and March 28. However, the practical examinations of BA-III (fine arts) will be held from March 26 to March 28, 2010. The time and venue for all practical exams will be the same. Punjab University is giving a special chance to students of all undergraduate and postgraduate, including professional, courses to take compartment examinations in September and December, 2010.

Sandeep wins taekwondo medal

Chandigarh based Sandeep Kundu, the gold medalist in taekwondo at the 11th South Asian Games at Dhaka, is aiming for the gold in the Asian Games. Kundu bagged the gold medal in the men's over-87kg category beating Ravindra Rajapaksha of Sri Lanka. The Indian contingent rounded off their taekwondo campaign with gold, silver and two bronze medals. Kundu said he would be attending the national camp, to be held in the third week of March, to prepare for the forthcoming Asian Games in China this November. Before that, he would be a part of the group to attend the two-month's training camp to be held in Korea.

Punjabi Singer Manmohan Waris

Punjabi play draws large audience

The North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, teamed up with Chandigarh chapter of the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) to stage a Punjabi play Gypsy urf Khanabadosh at the Tagore Theatre on 7th March. Structured in the rural open ambience, the play depicts the life of Gypsy kabila, who nourishes and ascribe to their independent concept of human rights with regard to their ambitions, joys and sorrows of life. Veteran of over dozen films and TV serials, KNS Sekhon, with a team of over 10 actors, attempted to bring alive the emotional and psychological feel of gypsy kabila inmates. Among others the protagonist, Teenu Sharma remained at her best while portraying the jovial and serious roles as the background music augmented the production level.

IPL fever in city

CHB to conduct draw

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) is gearing up for the draw of lots for its special housing scheme for the UT Employees. It may be recalled that the special housing scheme, floated in January 2008, had been marred by litigation ever since. On February 26, the Punjab and Haryana high Court dismissed the bunch of petitions on the scheme. The CHB had 45 acres in Sectors 52 and 56 for the construction of nearly 2,200 flats and it had received 7,746 applications. A senior CHB official said, "We have started the process of scrutinizing all applications. We will hold the draw of lots within a month." Though the draw of lots was yet to take place, employees who had applied under the scheme had been paying monthly interest on loans that most of them have taken from banks for initial deposit. Several employee associations had moved court, alleging discrimination regarding eligibility criteria for the scheme.

Chandigarh Metro Line

Chandigarh will soon have a metro line. UT Administrator Shivraj Patil has cleared the plan for the metro outline in the city and asked the administration to pursue the case in line with the project report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The project report has categorized the areas for the type of construction in whole of the UT. On one of the routes starting from Khuda Lahora, will be over ground till the PGI. From the medical institute till the Industrial Area, Phase I, near the existing railway station, the entire stretch will be underground. From this point, the metro will enter Panchkula. The second route planned from ISBT, Sector 17, via Sectors 22 and 35 will touch the ISBT, Sector 43 will be underground. The third metro line will be totally on ground will be from Dadu Majra crossing Maloya, Vikas Marg, Industrial Area, Phases I and II, till the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Information Technology Park.

Rare exhibition on hockey

A rare exhibition on hockey titled 'A Salute to Indian Hockey' is a unique photographic journey of the rich legacy of Hockey in India. Curator and Sports Filmmaker Sunil Yash Kalra will display 24 rare pictures depicting 100 glorious years of Indian Hockey. These pictures have been selected from a reservoir of over 5000 pictures and will be displayed in public domain for the first time at Hotel Taj in Sector 17 here from February 26. Community centers

The five community centers in the city under the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will be handed over for its maintenance and upkeep to the elected governing bodies of these centers on a trial basis for three months. Governor of Punjab and administrator of UT Chandigarh, Shri Shivraj V Patil, inaugurating the two-day Rotary District 3080 Conference said that a spirit of right positive attitude needs to be inculcated amongst the Indians to take the country forward. Later, Mr. Manish Tewari, member of parliament and spokesman of Indian National Congress, addressing over 1000 Rotarians at the District Conference which opened in the Law Auditorium here, lamented the vanishing concept of beat policing where a policemen knew the entire socio-ethnic structure of the people living in any locality on one-to-one basis, absence of which is leading to rising crime and insecurity for the citizens. In the afternoon session, Dr Kiran Bedi spoke about the changing role of women in the society. Airport New layout plan

The layout plan for Chandigarh airport is ready. A month after construction work of the Chandigarh International Airport in Mohali started, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has come up with the layout plan of the international airport. According to the layout plan, the airport will have a single 10,000 feet runway, with provision of extending it if required. This runway will be used both by the existing Chandigarh airport and the upcoming airport in Mohali, the Chandigarh airport will be integrated with the Chandigarh International Airport. At present, the Chandigarh airport is being upgraded; work is likely to complete by June this year.

Free ride on bicycles

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has planned an ambitious project for Chandigarh residents in order to make city pollution free. It has decided to promote public cycling so that city remains clean and green. The civic body has earmarked 50 lakhs for the project in the next financial year. MC officials say under this proposed plan, commuters will be able to hire cycles from designated cycle stands and then will have to surrender them at the other point. No charges will be levied for a cycle ride covered within 15 minutes, while for longer rides there will be minimal charges.

Rotary Confluence 2010, hosted by Rotary Club of Chandigarh Central was inaugurated by H.E. Shri Shiv Raj Patil, Governor of Punjab & Administrator of Chandigarh in the presence of eminent Rotarians like Raja Saboo, Shushil Gupta and Chetan Aggarwal. Mr. Patil congratulated the Rotarians for their achievements and asked them to keep on doing the same in the coming future. Haryana clinched the overall trophy in the 47th National Roller and Inline Hockey Championship, defeating Chandigarh in the final played at the roller hockey skating rink of KBDAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 7-B. The Roller Skating Federation of India (RSFI) conducted the championship. Around 700 international, national-level skaters, senior officials, technical committee members of the RSFI from all over India were part of the championship.

Rajasthan Cultural Festival

French perspective

An exhibition on Yamuna project, captured in 2008, by French filmmakers Cedrik Verdure and Jean Baptiste Poggi, started on 18th at Alliance Francaise, sector 36 and is on till February 26. The French directors travelled parts of India like Varanasi, Khaujuraho, Darjeeling and Chandigarh to shoot. Their documentary will be screened on February 20th at 5.30 pm at Alliance Francaise.

Dance sport workshop

The Six day dancesport workshop organized by Chandigarh Dancesport Association evokes good response. Being trained by Dr Priti Gupta and Shannon from Mumbai, more than 100 youngsters are getting finer on Cha Cha and Salsa, grooming them for the Chandigarh Dance sport Championship and later for the National dance Sport championship to be held later this year. Dancesport is now a medal sport for the 16th Asian games to be held in China in November this year.

Chandigarh made it to the semifinals of the 47th National Roller Hockey and Inline Hockey Championship being played at the Roller Skating Rink, KBDAV, Sector 7, Chandigarh, on Wednesday evening. The skaters from all parts of the country were competing in the quad and inline hockey events for both men and women category. The highlight of today's skating event was Chandigarh senior roller hockey men team qualifying for the semifinals by thrashing Delhi 14-1.

Rajasthan Art and Craft Festival

The Rajasthani Art and Craft Festival is starting today at Kalagram in Manimajra and will be on till February 26. This nine day long festival will have 140 stalls with things on display like traditional silver and artificial jewellery, gem stones, Pichhavi and miniature paintings, marble and brass items, traditional Rajasthani handloom and embroidery and paintings. Cultural events will also be organized by North-Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala. Rajasthani folk dancers and Sufi singers will entertain the crowd every evening for all the nine-days and afternoons will have Ghumar dance performances. Babu Khan, who has worked with Shankar Mahadevan is also scheduled to perform along with around 100 performers everyday!

Painting Exhibition

A painting exhibition dedicated to the Lord Shiva by Ravindra Sharma started on Shivaratri, 12th Feb, at Art Folio in Sector 9. Sharma has been keeping the tradition of holding the exhibition for past 27 years. Ravindra Sharma says, "Shivaratri is a time to turn one's darkness into light. Even the ratri comes with auspiciousness when it gets associated with Shiva." A thought that he inculcated from his mother a long time ago! This time his 21-framed prayer also carries an environment friendly message. The dominant deity in the series, Lord Ganesha, has been put in the nature's lap to convey that pollution-free nature is Ganesha himself. Ganesha, who is also known as Girja Suman, embodies Mother Nature. And for this particular series, Parvati is symbolically represented, in form of trees, mountains, sun and the moon while Shiva makes an appearance here and there, letting his son to be the centre of attraction.

Hema brings glory

Trials for wrestlers

The selected Chandigarh wrestlers will compete in the national selection trials in Sonepat. Competitions will be held for boys and girls in the following weight categories: Boys (freestyle): 46 kg, 54 kg, 63 kg, 76 kg, and 100 kg. Greco-Roman: 42 kg, 50 kg, 58 kg, 69th kg, and 85 kg. Girls (freestyle): 46 kg, 52 kg, 60 kg and 70 kg.

Theater Festival

The Katha Manchan Festival-2010 opens at Randhawa Auditorium at Punjab Kala Bhavan-16 on February 11. Organized by Mask Theatre, the festival will showcase five plays. On Thursday it will be "Darling", a story written by Anton Chekhov and directed by Ravinder Kumar (Ravi), a love story presenting the softness, innocence and human aspects of love. On February 12 Munshi Premchand's "Qaidi" will be performed. On Feb 13th, "Suraj di KoI Pith Nahi Hundi" on Feb 14th "Seemantani Updesh" and on Feb 15th Ganika will be performed.

Right Career Identification

A series of Seminars called Right Career Identification Initiative called 'Vision India Top 30' will be held at Bal Bhawan-23, Chandigarh on February 14. Chandigarh is now gearing up to become dance hub of the region. The very famous Saroj Khan has launched her first Dance academy of the region in Chandigarh on Tuesday! Located in Sector 34 Chandigarh, the Dance Academy featured her star buddies and Khan herself in full strength. Masterji, as she is popularly called, has set up the academy in association with Leo One Productions (India) Ltd. The academy played a gracious host to actors Tulip Joshi, Udita Goswami, Preeti Jhangiani, Priyanka Kothari, Zakir Hussain, Adi Irani, Shiva, along with Sandeep Shukla and Harpreet Singh of Leo One Productions. "Dance is a very important part of human expression. One can say so much in one movement! At this academy, we'll be teaching students the very soul of dance," says Saroj. From Bharatnatyam, Bhangra, Giddha to Bollywood, Jazz, Salsa, Hip-hop, Rock-n-Roll and Natwari etc, there will be a blend of dances and levels for various students. "But the intake will take place after screening and test," says Saroj, adding that "their focus will be on Bollywood style though, and that she too will be visiting twice a month to keep a check."

Chandigarh is all set to go ahead with smart card based Public Distribution system called PDS by end of this month. The identity of the smart card holder will be established by means of biometric impression of the holder when he'll insert the card in the POS terminal.
